Movie screening : To The Lighthouse

 Movie screening: To The Lighthouse

Hello readers!

Here is my Blogspot on movie screening : To The Lighthouse, based on the novel To the lighthouse by Virginia Woolf. Here I put some frames to study the movie.

About Virginia Woolf

Virginia Woolf was a pioneer of Stream of Consciousness as a narrative device, she was also considered one of the most important modernists of the 20th century. She wrote pioneering essays on artistic theory, literary history, women's writing and the politics of power. Her best known novels like Mrs. Dalloway, To The Lighthouse and many more.

To The Lighthouse :

To The Lighthouse  is a novel by Virginia Woolf, first published in 1927.Novel divided into three parts…

  1. The Window

  2. Time Passes

  3. The Lighthouse

Very first frame :

The movie begins with two dolls and blowing candles. It is symbolised that there will be a woman character who suffers from the deep emotionally like candle blow with pain but it gives light to the people. And also a symbol of death. This picture shows the death of women. Which is indicated in the very beginning part.

The Cornwall 1912 house shows the richness of the Ramsay family in the movie with the reference of the movie. The philosophical condition of the house represents psychological conditions of the characters. In the second part " Time passes" section, the ravages of war and destruction and passage of te are reflected in the condition of the house rather than in the emotional development or observable aging of the characters.

Affection between mother and son:

In this frame we can see a love or affection between mother and son. How mothers care about their sons. Only a mother has the power to handle or care for a child by saying good things. She takes care of her son better than her daughter's. It is shown in the very beginning how she treats her children and how she takes care of children.

Angry face :

James’s look – on the dinner table towards his father. In this frame the little boy is James. Who is the little son of Mr Ramsay and mrs. Ramsay. Here James is angry at his father. The angry ness also symbolises stubborn character or stubborn nature who get immediately angry. It shows hate towards father clearly. James thinks about his father and how father's behaviour towards him and how mother loves him.

Affectionate Between parents and child :

In this three frame we show that there is a mother who cares for her daughter after she feels that she is not the same as taking care of both son and daughter. And then she takes care of her daughter but that time the daughter's love grew towards her father. There is a butterfly in her hand that symbolises hope and happiness.

The Boar's skull :

The boar's skull symbolism transient nature is life and death. In the frame Mrs. Ramsay's covering it with her shawl that represent her desire to preserve life or that of Mr. Ramsay and Lily to be immortal through work art. It symbolically presents Mrs. Ramsay's understanding nature and enduring power to suffer for others as she wraps it with her shawl. There she thinks about her daughter.

Steam of consciousness :

In literature, stream of consciousness is a method of narration that describes happenings in the flow of thoughts in the minds of the characters. In these three frames all are in a stream of consciousness. All are in stream of consciousness at time of dinner. These characters are almost self dependent and they are in a stream of consciousness. All are in stream of consciousness at time of dinner. These characters are almost self dependent and they are in a stream of consciousness.

Window :

Window is the first part of the novel and that window is a symbol in the movie. Window is a symbol of relief, peace and also tension of somebody and from the tention or worry, they get relief from that place where they stand to think. There is a line that says "open windows and close doors" . It gives peace and quiet to backward from the situations

Fulfill desire : go to Lighthouse

In this frame fulfill the desire of James. He wants to go to the lighthouse and finally they are going to the lighthouse house. So the lighthouse is a symbol of hope and desire.

At the end of the movie lily's make painting of the summer house in which we can see that there is a picture of Mrs. Ramsay. It begins with the concern of women and ends with women. It symbolises power of women or a struggle of women.

Reference to India

Reference to philosophy

Reference to to Shakespeare

Reference to India :

In the Very beginning there is a reference about India. In this novel we can find reference to India. Perhaps it is a reference to the ruled India and the Indian empire. Here's perhaps  one referenced of the essence of beauty. It is from part one The Window. This reference is also connected with women's role and man's role in society. There is also reference to poverty, marriage. Mrs. Ramsay thought about setting a marriage between Charles Tansley and Lily Briscoe.

Reference to Shakespeare

There is reference that  he acknowledges a more profound truth that in the end no immortality exists, and even a stone will outlast a figure as influential as  William Shakespeare - Mr. Ramsay cannot help but catch his need to be comforted, to have others assure him of his place in the world and its importance.

Shakespeare's reference is used with questioning, that does the progress of civilization depend upon great man? Nor is Shakespeare necessary to it. Art is a main thing to become great.

Thinking Activity on John Keats: Finding out approaches to Death in Literature Hello readers! Here is my blog on Thinking Activity on John Keats: Finding out approaches to Death in Literature by Dr. Heenaba Zala, Department of English.   John Keats(1795-1821) Keats devotion to beauty and poetry is all the more remarkable in view of his lowly origin. John Keats was famous poet.               John Keats four odes, on a Grecian Urn, To a Nightingale, To Autumn and To Psyche. This poems are like an invitation to a feast.
