The Role of English in India

The role of English in india - # Unit one - #ELT

Hello readers!

Here is my blog on the role of English in India which is in our syllabus in ELT paper. This task is given by Vaidehi ma'am.

What is ELT ?

"ELT is teaching of English to people whose first language is not English. ELT is an abbreviation for 'English language teaching' ".

 Introduction :

The concept of English is not a purely pedagogic construct and has to be understood in the large historical, social and educational context.

It is a socio political setup. So power is equal to knowledge. Elite class is equal to lower class ( lower class by authority, according to kapil Kapoor all people are equal).

English is studied as a 'second language' but as such it is a third language . So we find a contrast in the language we study and the method through which we study.

Here are some questions!

1 ) What is the role of English Language in India according to you with reference to any one essay discussed in the class?

The role of English language in India as a second language with reference to Social Cultural dimensions : English as a second language by Rekha Aslam.

The role of English language in India as a second language there is a close connection between the form of English language and the social structure and the cultural sensitivity of Indian culture.

The Indian reality is established at many levels of language organization from borrowing alone creating idioms and metaphors transported to the English language. With the help of different examples English language teaching  describes how English is made to fulfill the function.

The role of English in India  described by Christopherson as a second language.

#Language which is one's own thought not the first in order to importance nor usually the first to be learnt.

#As a second language is used as an alternative way of expressing a culture of one's own.

#Produces bilinguals with active and creative interest.

2.) What are the challenges you faced while learning English Language as?

While learning English language as a second language, I face many challenges to learn English as a second language. Learning English as a second language seems very difficult to understand some sentences.

For example :

" Ek chutki sindoor ki keemat tum kya jaano Ramesh Babu! "

This example is in hindi language. If we translate it in English it seems Very difficult to translate. If we translate it, then it turns into a very funny manner or funny sentence like….

" How you know the price of One drop of vermillion ramesh babu!"

So, we translate some sentences and find out some word's meaning in english it seems very difficult to do. There I faced challenges like grammatical mistakes, vocabulary etc problems or challenges while learning English as a second language.

3.) Write your reflection regarding the classroom activities. What challenges you faced in doing the activities as teachers.

While studying all the essays we have done lots of activities as teachers. And also I face many challenges in doing the activities as teachers. It is very difficult to teach. While studying the essays once we came across one activity as teachers is that we have to teach one word to primary students. It is also very difficult to teach primary students. Doing activity I face many challenges such as how to introduce one word in a second language. For that I have to find many different ideas to teach them. I have to find a different method for teaching one word.

4.) How do you see your future with the English Language?

I see my future with the English language as Teachers. Then I will face many difficulties to teach English as a second language. So for that I used some ideas like...

# I must use different methods to teach English language.

# I came up with sufficient knowledge and experience

# self correction

# speak the target language ( English as a second language) in routine life, as especially college or school.

 Thank you!
