Thinking Activity : E.A. Poe's short story

Hello readers!

Here is my blog on thinking Activity reflected upon a short story by E.A. Poe's.

About E.A. Poe :

Edgar Allan Poe (January 19, 1809 - October 7, 1849) was an American author, poet, editor and literary critic, considered part of the American Romantic Movement best known for his tales of mystery and the macabre. Credited to be the inventor of the detective fiction genre, Poe has been regarded as one of the earliest American practitioners of the genre of short story.

Poe has also significantly contributed to the then emerging genre of science fiction now known also as Sci-fi literature. The first well-known American writer who endeavored to earn bread and butter by writing alone, Poe had to live a financially difficult life and career.

So, here is a short story by E.A Poe.

1. ‘The Tell-tale Heart’ :

"The Tell-Tale Heart" is about the guilt of a bad decision and how that guilt comes back to drive the said person insane. This story shows that everyone makes bad choices in life, so be prepared to handle the consequences. The guilt will weigh heavily on you, appearing to seep into your life, exposing you. Poe was dead-on when we wrote this story every single one of us has done something that we knew was wrong and had to bear the guilt. Whether we have found money and kept it instead of turning it in or cheated on a test, we have always harbored that fear of getting caught. In The Tell-Tale Heart Poe exemplifies that we must own up to our misdeeds.

2. ‘The Black Cat’ :

The fictional narrative is based upon the narrator’s situation with the effects of alcohol abuse. His actions with this alcohol has affected his whole life. Instead of seeing the narrator  himself needs help, he blames on the black cat. The Black Cat is symbolic for all the wrongs in the narrator’s life. The cat is maltreated every time something goes wrong with the narrator, it is the outcome of his alcohol abuse not because of the cat.

3. ‘The Fall of the House of Usher’ :

My reflection of this story is that I find the symbolism adopted in this fiction. The title is the fall of the House of Usher. I think the fall not only refers to the house’s collapse, but also the fall of the Usher family. The house also refers to both the house and the family.

4. ‘The Purloined Letter’ :

The Purloined Letter” establishes a new genre of short fiction in American literature: the detective story. Poe considered “The Purloined Letter” his best detective story, and critics have long identified the ways in which it redefines the mystery genre. It is a story about a stolen letter. Letter stolen in shuttle way. All knows who is the stoller of the letter. Further that all find letters  stolen in shuttle way.

5. ‘The Cask of Amontillado’ :

One of Poe's most famous short stories is “The Cask of Amontillado”. This story has much verbal and dramatic irony.  The most ironic concepts are how the narrator interacts with Fortunato and the use of names within this story.

Thank you!

Sunday Reading : Bonfire (Holika Dahan)

Sunday Reading : Bonfire (Holika Dahan) Some questions  are:   1 )  How many countries celebrate Bonfire ? Why? (If you can find reasons  ….are there common reasons?) Holika Dahan In some parts of India the day is actually called Holika Dehan. There are other activities associated with the story of Prahlad, but the burning of Holika is the one that we can most directly associated with Holi. Fire burnt on the eve of Holi (Holika Dahan) symbolizes the burning of Holika. The story as a whole is testament to the power of devotion (bhakta) over the evil represented by King Hiranyakashyapu , as Prahlad never lost his faith. Bonfire Night is a name given to various annual celebrations characterised by bonfires and fireworks. The event celebrates different traditions on different dates, depending on the country. There are many countries India, Iraq, nepal, Poland, Japan, Italy, Israel, Ireland, Iran, France, Canada, Australia, Central Europe etc celebrate bonfires ....
