Methods and Approaches in English Language Teaching.

Hello readers!

Here is my blog on Methods and Approaches in English Language Teaching.

Important methods of ELT :

Methodology is a system of practices and procedures that a teacher uses to teach Grammar Translation, the Audio lingual method and the Direct method are clear methodologies associated with practice and procedure and the nature of language and language learning.

English language teaching has many methods and approaches. It is necessary to know the difference between Methods and Approaches. An approach is a way of dealing with something or somebody. A method is the process used or the steps taken to deal with an issue or a person.

Important English Translation Methods :

1 .  The Direct Method. …

2 .  The Grammar Translation Method. ...

3 .  The Audio Lingual Method. ...

4.   The Structural Approach.

5 .  Suggestopedia. ...

6 . Total physical Response

7 . Communicative Silent Way...

8 .  Communicative Language  Learning

9 . Immersion

10 . Task based language learning

11 . The lexical syllabus

1 )  Grammar Translation Method :

The Grammar-Translation Method  evolved from the Classical Method that was used from the 15th century in the teaching of Latin and Greek- both long-since dead languages. Latin and Greek were taught to promote the intellect and virtually no attempt was made to speak them. GTM, formalized in Germany in the late-18th century, similarly places little or no emphasis on actually speaking or communicating in the target language.

Typical features of a GTM lesson:

  • mother tongue

  • teacher-centred

  • vocabulary taught

  • through wordlists and translation

  • reading of literary passages even at low levels, with reading comprehension questions

  • practice based on translation of texts to and from MT

  • elaborate presentation of grammar rules

  • memorization of grammar rules and vocabulary

  • vocabulary exercises include antonyms and synonyms, definitions etc based on words in reading texts

  • composition exercises based on topics from reading texts.

2 ) Direct Method :

What is meant by the direct method of teaching English?

The method Direct is named “direct” because meaning should be connected directly with the target language without translation into the native language.

       Procedure

       Only English used

A lot of teacher-students dialogues, later systematic  teaching of grammar and vocabulary

The salient feature of the direct method of English teaching as follows:

  •   Emphasis on oral language

  •    Intensive speech practice, usually with training in phonetics.

  •      The exclusive use of a new language.

  •    The approach initially inacceptable any choice to the mother tongue either for exercise on translation or for clarification of vocabulary and grammar.

3 ) The Audio Lingual Method:

The audio-lingual method, Army Method, or New Key, is a method used in teaching foreign languages. It is based on behaviorist theory, which postulates that certain traits of living things, and in this case humans, could be trained through a system of reinforcement.

Some characteristics of this method are:

  • Drills are used to teach structural patterns

  • Set phrases are memorised with a focus on intonation

  • Grammatical explanations are kept to a minimum

  • Vocabulary is taught in context

  • Audio-visual aids are used

  • Focus is on pronunciation

  • Correct responses are positively reinforced immediately

In the English language teaching we came to know that there are various methods and Approaches to learn.

Thank you!
