"Situating Postcolonial studies" by Aonial Ania Loomba
Introduction :
Situating Colonial and Postcolonial Studies Defining the terms: Colonialism, Imperialism, Neo-Colonialism, Postcolonialism From Colonialism to Colonial Discourse Colonial Discourse Colonialism and Knowledge Colonialism and Literature Textuality, Discourse and Material Processes.
Ania Loomba's Colonialism/Postcolonialism is an invaluable introductory text to the many theories, debates and critical agendas that inform and animate postcolonial studies.
The first chapter presents a comprehensive introduction to the field as well as an overview of its theoretical background through definitions of critical terms such as ‘colonialism’, ‘imperialism’ and ‘discourse’. Loomba examines the ways in which structures of knowledge….
# Colonialism :
Colonialism is defined as “control by one power over a dependent area or people.”
Colonialism is a practice of domination, which involves the subjugation of one people to another. One of the difficulties in defining colonialism is that it is hard to distinguish it from imperialism. Frequently the two concepts are treated as synonyms.
The concept of colonialism is closely linked to that of imperialism, which is the policy or ethos of using power and influence to control another nation or people that underlies colonialism.
# Imperialism :
Imperialism means " the policy of extending the rule or authority of an empire or nation over foreign countries, or of acquiring and holding colonies and dependencies".
Imperial government; rule by an emperor or empress.
# Postcolonialism :
What is Postcolonialism?
It is seen in terms of class, political control. Postcolonialism and Colonialism is a binary.
Postcolonialism is a mental condition which informs discourse.
There are many Postcolonial Fanon, Homi k Bhabha, Gayatri Spivak…
We can't make clear cuts about the Postcolonial and colonial period. M.K. Gandhi's Hind Swaraj is a Postcolonial text. Gandhi is relevant today because he opposed the machine, but the Nov machine is relevant due to the Corona crisis.
# Globalisation :
"Globalization means the speedup of movements and exchanges all over the planet. One of the effects of globalization is that it promotes and increases interactions between different regions and populations around the globe."
Globalization, they argued cannot be analysed to Postcolonial studies. The controversy about empire was thus shaped by wider and ongoing debates about nature and effects of Globalization.
Globalization and whether new transnational economic and cultural flows had so deeply altered the globe that the histories and legacies of empires were no longer for understanding the contemporary moment.
Thank you!
