Paper no- 15. Mass Media and Mass Communication

Topic : Role of Cinema in Education

~ Introduction :

Mass media, which is used not only to reach many people easily but also to inform, direct, influence and educate people, is the most important device of the 21st Century.

~ What is the role of cinema?

Cinema, which is used to educate people, as well as to entertain, influence and direct them, is accepted and used as the most important cultural conveyor of the 21st century. Cinema has the feature of reflecting the social, political and cultural changes and of contributing to reconstruction of reality.

According to Ryan and Kellner (1997,15) cinema is an indispensable means of production regarding ideological terms; because both have something in common that they are closely related: Representation,

“film does not show anything out there,” it offers by passing it through the filter of representation and converting.

~ Cinema as an Educational Tool :

In today's day and age, education has transcended the traditional and orthodox methods of teaching. It is the time when using technology for gathering knowledge seemed like a distant dream. A product of this technological development, the modern concept of utilizing movies as a tool for providing education continues to be found nowadays, because of the 21st Century.

The use of films as a teaching resource is suitable for education because films represent creative forecasts and predictions on future human society, helping the public realize what could occur in the future. By utilizing films in instruction, students can be trained to understand the three key functions of IoT and acquire the ability to develop creative applications of IoT. Intends that the film constitutes  an opportunity to develop the argumentative capacity of participants in a teaching session.

A film containing a  human story is an appropriate medium for the interdisciplinary approach indicated above. Films enable people to view life critically and can help people acquire newly required virtues.

Watching and discussing films in the classroom in the way that film pedagogy suggests, involves

activating critical judgement, critical approach and the personal voice of the subject. Film wanted students to become democratic, political and self-critical, reading films and treating moving images like cultural texts with representations of, for example, racism, gender or education.

During our study we use two watch films and when we are watching film for the purpose of education it gives critical thinking to judge the film from starting to end of the film with the camera focus.

This image is from the movie "Hamlet". Through this image we can assume or experience that the movie gives deeper understanding apart from the book. In this image is a play of Corus which gives real and exact understanding about corus. Without movies we can't understand about corus and how play defined corus. So, Film pedagogy is thus a confrontation of the personal beliefs inside the student with what is represented on the screen.

~ How movies can help in learning:

In education , using movies to teach can definitely be a challenge, but when carried out in a proper manner, it gives lots of benefits. Unlike texts, movies enable students to learn visually. The movie The Da Vinci Code for example, allows a student to view a symbol of Christianity, a paramount symbol in the history books. The visual clips provide a greater understanding of the time and era as well as the lifestyle of the historical figure than simple words. Additionally, movies are not limited in the way books are. They occasionally go beyond the syllabus and touch upon topics which might not be part of the course but important nonetheless, like the  power of women and man conflicts forming an inherent part of The Da Vinci Code.

~ The interest factor :

Interest is an important factor of learning. On a general level, many students respond better to watching movies than to reading which helps in keeping them interested and prevents them from getting easily distracted. This is especially effective for those who are not motivated readers and prefer videos over the written word.

Subtitled videos have also proven to substantially improve reading and literacy skills. And with so many novels getting film adaptations, teaching the subject of literature has become more versatile. Students can choose which medium of studying they prefer and even start a healthy debate on which version they found better and why.

For some students, learning through films is actually a boon. Even those with the severe learning disabilities have shown a response to movies and can relate to them.

~ The Educational Value of Films in education

Most of us watch films for enjoyment, but movies are also a great educational resource for helping students understand school material outside of the classroom environment. Here are just a few of the reasons why films are a great educational resource.

# Films are great for visual learners:

Every student has their own different learning style. Sometimes students learning or learning through reading doesn’t come easily to students about what is the plot or theme of the movie or film but Movies are great resources for visual learners because they enable them to understand concepts without the barriers that hinder learning. Movie gives all the concept visuals which helps students to critically read the movie.

The power of film to make an emotional connection and how best to enable people to experience this power through education was the theme of a roundtable discussion.

# Films provide a visual aid to understanding historical events

As students learn about history in the classroom, it isn’t always easy to fully realize how a historical situation would have really felt. For example, an historical drama like Saving Private Ryan can help students understand the Second World War, or a movie like Les Misérables can help students understand the French Revolution.

# Foreign films can help teach language :

Movies help teach students language. When students are learning a language easily like English for example, it helps to watch a movie in English and try to follow along as much as possible so they can apply everything they learned. watching movies can also help in improving language speaking and writing.

# Films help students understand concepts like theme, style, and genre :

Students often have difficulty grasping these concepts when hearing about them in an English or Art class. Identifying theme, style and genre in a movie allows students to grasp these concepts in a medium that is more familiar to them. Through the textbook it is far difficult to find out the theme easily but the grasp of the movie gives deeper understanding of the movies.

# Films allow students to see life through different perspectives :

Just like books, movies allow students insight into the lives of different characters, how their perspective differs and how they handle certain situations. Films can show students how different people, in different parts of the world, live their lives. This can be particularly useful in subjects like geography and social studies. Movies help to understand characters deeply and we can see the expression which also gives the deep understanding of the characters who have played a significant role in the movies.

~ Parallels between Cinema and Education :

Cinema has the power to start conversations, and Education has the capability of instigating discourse.

Cinema has the power to create a catharsis, and Education too can settle thoughts and aid catharsis.

Both Cinema and Education have the power to influence and change.

Cinema and Education both centre around the audience. The role of the storyteller is to make meaning of the message and the world and communicate that convincingly to the audience.

And both Cinema and Education have the responsibility to treat their messaging and audiences with care.

~ Films Introduce New Concepts and Latest Technology to Students :

Technology has advanced at a very fast pace in the past few decades and in the Covid 19 also. Now students can access an essay writing service in just a click through technology at home. In these changing times, it is very important to keep up with the latest developments in technology. Technology and film help students to carry on education in the corona pandemic also. It's important not only to understand the variety of opportunities and facilities that we have with us today but also to make optimal use of them, which is Films. Films tell the students about technological advancement related to the content of the storyline as well as about the cameras and lenses. Films give deeper understanding whether it is physically movie screening or hybrid movie screening. It gives important concepts to students which we lack in Books.

~ Conclusion :

Thus, Role of Cinema in education concludes that how cinema or movies play a vital role in education. It gives experience , knowledge and deeper understanding of the movie rather than Book Knowledge.
